In October of 1990 Fredi Claproth of
Asuka Technologies located at 17145 Von
Karman Ave. Suite 110, Irvine, CA 92714
(714) 757-1212. Sent AMUG a NuScan color
hand scanner system for the Macintosh.
After a month of testing we found the
unit easy to use and quite accurate in its
abilities. The hand unit is pictured below.
Installation...
The NuScan comes in two
configurations a Nubus or a SCSI
connection. We selected the Nubus
selection for this review. I have found
that many individuals are already
running several SCSI devices and as such
if you have a Mac II series computer the
Nubus model is a good choice to avoid SCSI
conflicts. The card was installed in about
five (5) minutes and we were up and
running. The hand scanner measures

about 4" by 6" and connects to the nubus
card.
Getting Started...
The NuScan color hand scanner allows
you to select several image options
including Natural 256 tones, Grayscale 16
tones, Grayscale 256 tones and dithered
4096 colors. I found myself using the 256
tones default option most of the time. You
also have the option to set the scanning
size but as the scanner is small anyway I
always kept the size to the 2.5" by 5"
maximum scanning area. Once these
options are set you are ready to scan. The
scanner has a 4096 color scanning
capacity, 90 DPI with 12 bit color
resolution, and one
inch per second
scanning
capability.
